A bit surprised and wondering if I would have spotted this on my walk toward the building. I didn't remember seeing this and was glad to have avoided walking into this on the way there.

Stopping at a Former GM facility

Now claimed by gang graphic artists I suppose. There was a big hardly every used parking lot next to it. I didn't realize this was likely part of this same property. Maybe because I was in a hurry to get to Mexican Town to meet up with some guys from LATOC web site. I was kind of tired, running late, but wanted some fresh pictures from 03-29-09 to add to the mix.

As you can see this has little to do with the Detroit blog here. This is just a test and I"m exporting the XML and comparing this added with the previous. The goal being to figure out if I can do raw manipulation, imports and exports of the blog and what modifications to the XML will allow me to merge and modify posts to bring more than one month under one month. If there is a simple way to manually do this, it might be kind of beneficial. There may be some tools to do this as well, but for now I'm trying the basic hack the raw export data, then reimport it method.

Okay it worked. It even put the inserted the new posting with an earlier publishing date time inserting it between older blog entries.

In my Studying decay2 blog, I'm going to show you some steps which should make it fairly clear how to import this.

Keys are :
1. Exported or downloading blog to hard drive.
2. Open up XML of new blog XML in text editing program.
3. Find TITLE of first post, then look back up for the "1999" label above it in the text file. It should be up not to far from the title, maybe a 3 to 5 lines up depending on your display.
"A Sample TItle For This Test Goes here" - in my case I used this title of this post which is shown in quotes and obviously a title in the newer blog post, which was in Studying Decay2. I simply searched for that TITLE and found the section with the blog post data. THen looked for the publishing date which was above the title after the "1999" section.

4. Look for publsh date, that date needs to be modified to the earlier month. Only that date field needs to be modified.
Each post in your blog after the first titled data area will be in this lower part of the text file and it will start with another 1999 label. Pretty easy to find.

5. For multiple posts just look down in the XML file for each 1999 label and then look for the PUBLISH date after that for each blog entry. Just change all the dates to the last date and time if you want them to appear after your last post. I changed mine to 03-31 as you can see but my time stamp was probably before the posts that are above this, so my new imported blog entries were inserted before some of them.
6. Save the XML perhaps as a new name.
7. You have this new XML file on your hard drive you simply need to open the older blog, and import the entries from your newer blog into it. You can either publish all of them or some of them using the blogging tool. Your new blog entries will be in the older blog with a date that you choose in the publish. With this method you can merge blogs together and reorder them. It's a little tedious but it works if you want all your entries under one blog.

Here's the John King bookstore. A large used bookstore. I remember going there for lunch and being in the Michigan history book room, and a guy asked my friend if we wanted to be in there. We didn't know why another person would question why we were in a certain room of the used book store ignored him and kept looking at books. Then my friend said, "hey let's get out of here." We walked out to another area of the building and there was a large guy looking at books in the room whom I practically ignored and didn't even notice. "Do you know who that was in there?" my friend asked. No I didn't notice. That was Governor John Engler. Apparently Engler liked to visit once in a while and was looking for history books. One of his state trooper security guys was apparently trying to clear the way and check us out and that's why he asked us if we wanted to be there. We continued on out and returned to work from our lunch.

Cobo is south on Jefferson. You'll drive right up to the building and have to drive under it. RIght not there's debate going on between our current mayor and the City council regarding expansion of this. One argument is to expand it to bring in larger conventions, but of course with the economic downturn, there's talk about the auto show going away and maybe not enough conventions to merit the expansion.

Kind of hard to see from this vantage point, as you can see the people mover elevated monorail runs right by this building. Taking the people mover in daylight provides tons of photo opportunity. Don't take the people mover at night for photos however because the glass is dark and you won't get any decent ones from it at night.

Here's the new stadium. When this first opened and they allowed us to take video cameras in and actually do home video of the games, which was pretty interesting. I don't remember taking a video camera in there however, so I don't think I have video. The stadium is partially sunk down into the ground so you can see more of the Detroit skyline when inside the park. I actually like the design of the park. I find it interesting. It used to be that you could just walk around and sit anywhere, if there were empty seats they'd let you sit almost anywhere as long as the ticket holder wasn't there. Some fans got upset because they were paying for really nice seats, and others who paid for cheap seats would wander into the expensive sections and take seats while paying much less to watch the game. This of course offended the high paying ticket fans. What I really liked about that policy was you could watch part of the game from one area of the park and then sit somewhere else. It wasn't like you had to sit in the best area, but you had a much wider variation of the experience of the game. There's still plenty of good places where you can stand and watch them from different vantage points however. It's not the same as the old stadium, but I never was a big fan of baseball and only attended maybe 6 games when I was a kid at Tiger Stadium. I've actually gone to Comerica park more than Tiger Stadium.

There's plenty of these things in the city. I remember one inner city pastor remarking about someone wanting to give him an inner city apartment building. He said he looked at it and realized he could spend his entire life working on it and never have a chance to restore the thing, it was so huge. He politely declined.

Driving up Cass Avenue, actually toward the river we see Wayne State University. This I suppose is a normal university perhaps. We can see some restaurants and bars under the white awning to the left. As we travel further down Cass Avenue toward I-75 we get into Detroit's Cass Corridor. We actually will drive past some abandoned Chinese town buildings as well, but I have no photos of these at this time to post, I skipped taking photos while driving past those.

Piquette Market Fire the aftermath. The smoke was still rising after the fire was out. Powdered dust from the bricks lined the streets. Steel is fireproof, but twists in a fire as it's heated and expands at different rates. Some fuel caused the fire to burn, probably all the cars, and other items stored inside. I don't remember reading the stories about the actual cause. This is some photos I took when I could get down there and these were stitched inside a photo stitch software program to create this. I"m turning around, my car is almost silent, windows down. I can hear this grating sound of metal on pavement. Almost like an inner city Amish buggy I suppose, as a metal wheel scrapes along down the street. Here comes a guy on a bike, his rear wheel is missing a tire. I couldn't resist taking a picture of him after he passed. I figure taking a picture without his face will protect his identity. It was one of those magic moments in photographing decay. I wish the focus was a bit better.

Walls of a fortress type protect the power station and transformers. I heard a story/rumor about one guy who tried to cut a wire that was a power line, when police arrived they just found a severed limb that may have come off from the power line. This sounds like a good urban myth. Supposedly the police never found the guy but thought the live wire severed his hand.

The Piquette market was a huge warehouse, former Ford Motor Company plant having to do with Model T production as well. This had storage, and some wholesale food distrubution inside it. There was a fire. I have photos of the results and the entire block burned down. Nothing left but twisted metal and piles of bricks. The entire block is now a huge brownfield under a reclamation project apparently. The owners said they'd rebuild. Apparently they have some kind of brownfield project to get the grounds in good shape and allow this to be built better for the future.

A different day - flight path of birds in migration

To get away from the Fisher 21 building photos for a minute, I want to show a photo from 3-17-2009 of the New Center Area. This is down East Grand Blvd. We are looking down past the former building where the ACLU was housed (now moved to Wayne State University area, down past the 8 story building, now Detroit Police Service Center, formerly a State building, and before that an office building and before that a 4 story Model T factory, which had more floors added onto it. Past that we see the Fisher Building and Cadillac Place, formerly the GM building. Here a pair of Falcons sit waiting to devour thousands of birds each year. They nest have baby falcons, fly off and some winning pair returns. To sit in this flight path and munch on Mc Birdies of all sizes and shapes. It's amazing to watch them when they are flying.

One year a Falcon attacked a turkey vulture. Turkey vultures often fly along and high above other birds in the migratory path in the hundreds and even thousands of them being seen and recorded. So the falcons attacked some poor Turkey vulture, because they felt it a threat to the little falcon chicks. And someone found this poor Turkey vulture walking around the streets of Detroit with a damaged wing, unable to fly. A bird sanctuary had the bird for a while. It's bad enough being a vulture, but to be a wounded one in Detroit is the pits.

Yes many birds fly over Detroit

This is a major migratory route for birds. They fly across the river from Canada in large numbers. It's easier to fly across the narrow straits of Detroit. Birds have to conserve energy and use the winds and choose a better path. So one path is across the river, down Woodward and then take a left turn down Grand Boulevard toward Monroe and Toledo. It's a major flight path. And some birds like Falcons sit on buildings like the Fisher building and wait for dinner to fly by. Falcons like tall buildings like a natural cliff. And seek to save energy by flying off the high building down toward their prey. This hawk (I think I mistyped this as an eagle in the other post (I'll correct that) was soaring slowly northward. I thought I had him on video as well, but pressed the record button twice and paused it. Darn. Anyway I took a few stills. I would have taken more had I not thought I was getting great video.

I walked right up, right up near the porch

I was right up near that porch on the left side. Trying to get a photo of light streaming down through the roof onto the sidewalk. A couple of dogs in a nearby yard were barking. There was a big dog in the back yard of these row houses. I saw him from the alley and thought nothing of it. All of a sudden he bounded through the buildings, as there are no doors on these. Running over loose boards and whatever else is in there, probably shards of glass, nails you name it. And he arrived on the front porch looking down at me and started barking. The front fence is only a foot or so from the porch, he could have jumped it as it's only as high as the porch and been on me in a second. Fortunately he was just being territorial, but not in the mood to come out on the sidewalk. I wondered at that time, how smart I was thinking about two legged problems, but kind of ignoring four legged ones. Needless to say, I didn't get my photo of the light streaming down or the dog. I just walked away keeping an eye and wondering if I'd have enough time to even react had he jumped onto the sidewalk. I drove my car by the front area with my video camera and yelled a bit to see if I could get him to stir and come back out to get the dog on video. It would have made good utube video, but he apparently wasn't interested in running out 5 minutes later, so I continued my journey back toward the Fisher 21 plant. We often think about some bum being in a building or inside a dark hallway. What about a pit bull? If one came at you while shooting photos would you have something for defense against him? It's probably not a good idea to shoot photos like this on foot or alone.

These abandoned row houses are so interesting. The multiple colors yet complete destruction of them. They probably had a ton of character when they were new. The we kill roaches sign adds a great foreground touch to the photo, don't you think. Someone put the sign up here. I saw the same sign ad on another post elsewhere in the city and the price was $50 per house, not $50 per roach or mouse as some might think in looking at the way this is written. I wonder how you can kill all the roaches for $50. Maybe with fire.

This is one of the Fisher Body Plant areas. When I think about FIsher Body, I always think about a place on Fort Street that has been torn down. This is an area near I-94 and I-75 however. This is near Fisher Body 21. Here we see some abandoned houses which are near some new construction. I find it fascinating to see abandoned burned out houses, right next to new construction in Detroit. This could be looked at in a negative or positive light. Who wants to live near an eye sore? Someone will, often the former residents of the eye sore. As bad rental housing or some unfortunate accident happens, there's someplace new to move to. Maybe across the street. There was a smell of natural gas near the front sidewalk of these houses. I didn't report the smell. Maybe another day. There was a guy working on a house that looked as old as these a half a block away. It needed work and he was working on the porch or railing. These houses will likely be torn down, at least that's what I'd think while looking at them.

Detroit Library - looking back as I drive by

I can't take photos on both sides of the street very well while driving. This is a shot looking back toward the Detroit Public library. This is one of the few libraries that had a full patient search library in it. However the web may make that a little obsolete by now. There are patients online. They have a large collection of video tapes of old movies as well. DVD's of newer ones. You have to buy a membership to rent movies however if you're not a citizen of Detroit. Movies are also rented, even to members. Cheaper than Blockbuster. DVD's are starting to get a greater variety of old films for old movie buffs.

I know, I know the photo is not exactly the best and it's not level. This was shot as I was driving. Detroit Art Museum. They used to have a nice restaurant inside, I don't know if they still have one in there, it's been a long time since I've been in there.

There's a Detroit Science Center nearby as well. I just took some photos of some of the buildings in the area as I was driving and taking photos and moving along to the next abandoned photo shoot. If you get a chance to visit Detroit, check out the interiors of some of these places, The library, science center, art museum, and perhaps this one as well. This is a newer museum, so I can't say much about the inside structure as it's fairly new.

Near Wayne State University

Karmonos Cancer Institute. Did you know you could get cancer three, four or five times easily in your life and not even know it. Cancer cells are mutations of healthy cells. If they mutate in a "large" manner, where the body can detect them, T-cells will recognize the mutation and destroy them. However it's the minor mutations that the bodies defenses don't recognize that can kill you. My old doctor used to say, if you live long enough, eventually cancer will kill you. He said, it's an old persons disease. Meaning simply as radiation and other things cause mutations, eventually some of them become dangerous enough in your body to cause cancer and kill you. For this reason, there may never be a cure found for cancer as it's like saying we're going to find a cure for random chance. Or lottery bad luck. The longer you live, the longer genetic dice are rolled.

There is new construction in Detroit

It seemed that back near the end of Coleman Young's administration there was little construction going on in the neighborhoods at least that was the talk I heard, but maybe that was just rumor. It seemed that 10 to 15 years ago, no new houses were being built. Some of the newer mayors and perhaps the administration or Detroit workers and businesses started more attempts to revitalize some areas. There are areas where there are blocks of houses which have no abandoned houses, they may even be old. I didn't take photos of many of these, because I'm not wanting to invade the privacy of homeowners with a bunch of photos of their houses. So this blog, doesn't tell the entire story as far as houses and construction in Detroit. To be a little balanced, although this does focus mostly on decay, I'm showing an example of some new construction. Here's an area where a large complex of homes or condos are being developed. Here's the model house.

The steady drip of a fire hydrant. Some folks were walking down the street, but not to close. The signs falling near the hydrant. I should have took a video clip to get the sound of the water. It would have made a nice short clip. It's probably still dripping there.

I was showing someone a tour of these photos, they thought this was inside the train station. Nope and I wasn't inside. Just a window peeping camera shot.
